Midseason evaluation..

Is it really the middle of the season for growing tomatoes??  No.. It's more like the three quarter mark..  with first frost could be anytime now hard to believe but the midway point for tomatoes to be produced is about now with a very short three weeks ago I pulled the first tomato off the vine and just a short three weeks until first frost???   maybe.. So here is where we stand.. The tomato variety the I had wanted to try last year, the container variety being disappointing so far and the reason why is beyond me.. They aren't bushing up like they normally do.. I didn't cage them and they really struggled to grow.. Until that wind that destroyed the memorial tree and laid over every other plant we have that's when I caged those and they still are struggling.. Could be that wind did more damage to these than I thought..

The caspian pink variety in the planter on the ramp really did get nailed and was sickly for the past two weeks but in the very last week seems to be perking up a little.. The decision to continue to water this plant might pay off.. There are fruits showing however they are small like the container variety.. Cross polination happened??  Could be..

The tomatoes in the gas meter area are growing the best with the Roma variety looking unstoppable, and very large fruits bigger than the last attempt to grow this variety.. Even with the Moby Grape variety draped all over it.. And those are growing quite well as well...

The one tomato plant that was a question mark was the krim type.. It is a deeper red and hopefully I'll get pictures of that when another one is ripened (I ate the first two, they were HUGE...Pumpkin influenced??)  I have troubles with variety of tomatoes that are not red.. I tried a stripy version and ws never sure if they were done or sickly.. The tomatoes that are yellow when ripened I have never tried.. Seems like they would get picked when they are far from ripe.. But over all..

This has been a fairly good season for tomatoes and am hoping that first frost will hold off until.. well I'd take November but I don't think there has ever been that late of a first frost..  This is always that sad point of the season when I am both ready for the heat to stop being and wanting the tomatoes to produce through until every blossom produces a tomato.. That can never happen, a 100% produce planting has never been achieved by me and more than likely anyone else who lives in our growing area.. The only real way to do that would be to have a green house or something like that..

My older brother was talking about his strawberry plants and I told him he could mow them with a mower set to the lowest setting.. That might kill them.. Would that be so bad.. I HATE STRAWBERRIES on the equal with his hating of tomatoes..  maybe even more.. While he eats stuff with catchup and salsa and other things that have tomatoes in it, I won't eat anything with strawberries in it unless I can doctor it up to not have ANY strawberry taste whatsoever..  Did I mention I HATE strawberries??  There really is nothing wrong with strawberries that being wiped off the planet wouldn't cure..
